Benefits of Acupuncture on Kidney Function
This study noted, "We examined how acupuncture affected the blood flow of muscle, kidney, stomach, small intestine, brain, lung, heart, spleen and liver. Wistar rats anesthetized with urethane (n = 27) were allocated into the control (n = 10), ST-7 (Hsia-Kuan, n = 10) and LI-4 (Hoku, n = 7) groups. To measure organ blood flow, colored microspheres (CMS) were injected through a catheter positioned in the left ventricle and blood samples were drawn from the femoral artery. Yellow CMS (3.6-4.2 x 10(5)) and blue CMS (6.0-6.9 x 10(5)) were injected at intervals of about 30 min. An acupuncture needle (varphi 340 mum) was inserted into the left ST-7 point (left masseter muscle) or the right LI-4 point after the first sampling and left for about 30 min (10 twists at 1 Hz, 2-min intervals). The mean blood flow of nine organs varied widely from 4.03 to 0.20 (ml/min/g). Acupuncture to the ST-7 produced significant changes of the blood flow (percentage change from baseline) in the muscle, kidney, brain and heart, versus control), but those of LI-4 were not significant. The blood flow of the left masseter muscle after acupuncture to ST-7 (left masseter muscle) tended to increase. Changes in blood pressure during the experimental periods were almost similar among these three groups. Acupuncture stimulation increases the blood flow of several organs by modulating the central circulatory systems, and the effects differed with sites of stimulation." (Tsuru,2009). Tsuru, H. and K. Zhineng (Wisdom Healing) Qigong for Kidney Stones Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is frequently used in the general population, yet scant data are available regarding the prevalence of these medications in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). OBJECTIVE: To survey patients with ESRD regarding their use of CAM and health foods. METHODS: Consecutive patients treated with dialysis or renal transplantation for ESRD were approached by nephrologists of 5 renal centers to report their usage of and knowledge on CAM and health foods by answering a questionnaire. Of 180 approached patients, 164 returned completed questionnaires for analysis. RESULTS: Fifty-seven percent of dialysis patients and 49% of transplant patients reported to be regular CAM-consumers. CAM consumption was positively associated with female sex and negatively with diabetes as comorbidity. Forty-one different CAM products had been named, with mineral supplements and vitamins ranking first. Besides CAM, many renal patients had regularly consumed herbal teas and citrus-juices (50% and 35%, respectively). Close to 40% of the documented CAM/health food consumptions have potential risks for patients because of constituents that either accumulate in renal failure or interact with pharmaceutical medication. However, only about 50% of dialysis patients, but 73% of transplant patients used to inform their physicians about CAM consumption (P = .005). Awareness about interaction risks linked to CAM was especially low in dialysis patients when compared to transplant patients (39% versus 78%, P < .0001) and increased when physicians had routinely questioned patients about their CAM consumption. Currently, however, patients reported that only a minority of physicians had taken an active interest into consumption of these substances. CONCLUSION: Consumption of CAM and health food is common among renal patients. Physicians are currently not adequately informed about CAM consumption by their patients. Because many products are at risk to either accumulate or cause interactions with medication, physicians should take an active role to inform themselves. Nowack,2009). Nowack, R., C. Balle, et al. (2009). "Complementary and alternative medications consumed by renal patients in southern Germany." J Ren Nutr 19(3): 211-219. Yoga as Clinical Treatment in End Stage Renal Disease To evaluate the effects of a yoga-based exercise program on pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and biochemical markers in hemodialysis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 2004 a randomized controlled trial was carried out in the outpatient hemodialysis unit of the Nephrology Department, Uludag University Faculty of Medicine. Clinically stable hemodialysis patients (n=37) were included and followed in two groups: the modified yoga-based exercise group (n=19) and the control group (n=18). Yoga-based exercises were done in groups for 30 min/day twice a week for 3 months. All of the patients in the yoga and control groups were given an active range of motion exercises to do for 10 min at home. The main outcome measures were pain intensity (measured by the visual analogue scale, VAS), fatigue (VAS), sleep disturbance (VAS), and grip strength (mmHg); biochemical variables-- urea, creatinine, calcium, alkaline phosphatase, phosphorus, cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, triglyceride, erythrocyte, hematocrit--were evaluated. RESULTS: After a 12-week intervention, significant improvements were seen in the variables: pain -37%, fatigue -55%, sleep disturbance -25%, grip strength +15%, urea -29%, creatinine -14%, alkaline phosphatase -15%, cholesterol -15%, erythrocyte +11%, and hematocrit count +13%; no side-effects were seen. Improvement of the variables in the yoga-based exercise program was found to be superior to that in the control group for all the variables except calcium, phosphorus, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels. CONCLUSION: A simplified yoga-based rehabilitation program is a complementary, safe and effective clinical treatment modality in patients with end-stage renal disease. (Yurtkuran,2007). Dr Christine Northrup M.D. says on the Oprah Winfrey Show: “Chi kung (“Qigong”) is where you use your mind to increase energy flow to the body… Traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture can work wonders because it works with the chi (“Qi”) of your body—the energy flow—and we have good scientific evidence that shows that energy meridians are absolutely real and there.” - Jan 18, 2008 --- Zhineng Qigong Research Center - Penang, Malaysia http://www.zhineng.com.my/
The New York Times says: “The face of exercise is changing in America. Instead of relentlessly pursuing a sculptured physique, people are chasing longevity, stress reduction and improved health through mind-body practices like Qigong.“ - April 5, 2007 --- Zhineng Qigong Research Center - Penang, Malaysia http://www.zhineng.com.my/
Lee from Penang says: “In November 2006, I went to the Penang General Hospital for my annual medical exam and found a 2-cm cyst in my left breast. I took the two-week Zhineng Qigong Recovery Class and focused on transmitting Qi to my left breast and practiced very hard to dissolve the cyst. Three days after the Recovery Class, I went for a mammogram and it was confirmed that the cyst was no longer there.” --- Zhineng Qigong Research Center - Penang, Malaysia http://www.zhineng.com.my/
Kidney Stones – Soh Aik Leng from Penang says:
In 2001, I went to the Penang General Hospital for a medical check-up after noticing traces of blood in my urine. An x-ray scan revealed that there was a small stone of about 1cm in diameter in my left kidney. Two years past and the stone in my kidney became much bigger. Consequently I had to undergo a lithotripsy operation. The stone was broken into halves but still remained in the kidney. Three months later, another round of checkups revealed that there were also stones in my bladder. I sought both western and Chinese medical treatment but failed to effectively eradicate my problem. One day, on my way to the Penang General Hospital, I saw a signboard for the Zhineng Qigong Development Centre. That gave me the idea of trying qigong as an alternative healing method. I signed up to join the Level One class. On the third day of class, I passed out two tiny stones in my urine. Subsequently, when I went for another round of x-ray, it was confirmed that there were no more stones in my kidney or bladder. I feel so fortunate to have learnt this amazing method of self-healing. I now practice the Level One method daily."

Introducing Your Health Coach: Kimberly Burnham
I look forward to working with you and learning about your health needs and goals. Please feel free to contact me via email with any questions you may have. I'm here to support you in your effort to create the life you desire.
I have a diverse educational background which has allowed me to see as the Japanese say, “there many ways to get to the top of Mount Fuji.” I completed my PhD in Integrative Medicine in 2006 on "The Effect of Integrative Manual Therapy on the Symptom’s of Parkinson's Disease." and have done substantial research into the benefits of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) enabling me to understand the health concerns of my clients and work as part of a health care team, when desired, communicating effectively with my client as well as their health care providers.
In 1993, I graduated Sutherland-Chan Massage Therapy School in Toronto, Canada. An excellent education there prepared me for a move into the health care field. I also spent 5 years studying at the Canadian College of Osteopathy, which helped me each individual person in a holistic way. My training in cranial work, energy medicine, Brain Stimulating Method, Listening with the Whole Body, Clinical Hypnotherapy, and Non-Violent Communication has developed my ability to listen to the client and perceive shifts as they progress towards their goals.
I have been in private practice using Integrative Medicine, Manual Therapy, Matrix Energetics and Health Coaching for the last two years in West Hartford, CT as well as consulting in a number of physical therapy clinics across the country. Before that as the Director of Knowledge Management at the Center for Integrative Manual Therapy, I answered questions for clients, students and the general public about what non-surgery and non-medication related therapies can do for healing and health. Two of my favorite quotes around the potential of an integrative approach to health and consciousness are, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Arthur C Clarke, Science Fiction Writer and "Magic is the art of causing changes in consciousness at will" Dion Fortune.
My global perspective on health and good living is the result of growing up in Colombia and in Belgium and later teaching English and studying shiatsu in Japan. My favorite place in all the world to Scuba dive is the Red Sea off the coast of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. I agree with Albert Einstein that , “the most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or hostile universe.." My world view is that we live in an abundant universe supportive of each of us having quality of life.
I currently live in West Hartford, CT with my partner and enjoy traveling, most recently working in Germany and touring Turkey, where I visited a memorial to Rumi, one of my favorite poets who said, "There is a field out beyond right and wrong. I will meet you there.".
I practice Tibetan meditation, Wisdom Healing Qigong and love growing fruits and vegetables in my garden. These activities center and calm me, allowing me to be more present for my clients. They also empowers me to change and reach my personal goals. As Richard Bartlett, developer of Matrix Energetics says, "Change now, while you still can. Change now because you can, change now because it is the right thing to do. Change now because there is no right, no left, no time left, no space left. Only you. Change"
Freedom of Space and Time
Here's my check in on my two baby steps!
1. Switch out the bedside tables - I did not do this. In the process, I realized that, for now, the tables work fine. What I did was to remove 50% of what was on them leaving only what gives me joy! And, as a result, I have been like a tornado in the bedroom doing the same thing. And, have liberated one bathroom of all the things that do not give me joy!
2. Holding things up in my house using the Joy Barometer is working perfectly for me. I am looking at everything with that eye as I pass from room to room and it is making what seemed insurmountable very doable!
Thanks for the time, the attention, the session. – Julia R.
Manifesting Cosmic Overdraft Protection
Thank you so much for the session. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I could literally feel the energy on around me and coming from the paper . I also once I hung up was flooded with ideas of how to attain extra money. Also at work the very next day I was offered by a customer a financial opportunity to do in my spare time and depending on how much I sell could manifest a trip to see the seven wonders if the world in 2012. I was thrilled. Thank you for your generosity. I feel more focused and was very happy with the session ! Claudia B.
Quality of Life Management 101
Chronic Conditions
Chronic just means something has been going on for a while or it hasn’t changed in a positive way for a while. Chronic says nothing about the potential for healing and shifts in the condition.
At Visualize Health we see so many people who are healing and recovering from a wide variety of conditions, previously considered chronic or degenerative.
Many chronic conditions can be improved by simple changes to healthy lifestyle habits such as visualization, exercising, eating better, managing your stress/anxiety, losing weight and attaining freedom from addictions.
The personal health coaches at Visualize Health work with individuals who have a diagnosis of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or other chronic issues such as arthritis, back pain, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, Celiac disease and more.
Motivation and Performance
“Organizations have learned that highly motivated and fulfilled employees at all levels produce high-performance results for the organization.” Laura Whitworth (2007) in Co-active coaching: new skills for coaching people toward success in work and life.
Our body can be thought of on some level as a large organization of cells. When each cell is highly motivated, fulfilled and in high performance mode, results for the individual person can be a remarkable quality of life. At Visualize Health, we use health coaching principles all the way from a look at relationships at the team or business organization level to a look at health on a cellular level, working always with the individual person and their needs.
The Coaching Relationship
Coaching is a form of conversation, a dialogue between the coach and client or organizational team with qualities including respect, openness, compassion, empathy, and a rigorous commitment to speaking the truth.
Coaching is not about solving problems, although problems will be solved. It is not primarily about improving performance, attaining goals, or achieving results, although all of that will certainty happen in an effective coaching relationship.
Coaching is chiefly about discovery, awareness, and choice. It is a way of effectively empowering you to find your own answers, encouraging and supporting you on the path as you continue to make important choices.
Questions and Answers
Questions and Answers come from the you, from you inner wisdom, the power of your mind and subconscious. The coach does not deliver answers. The coach asks questions, inviting discovery. The client may never have sought the answer before the coach asks the question - the question creates the channel for self-discovery - but the answer is already there for you.
Clients are more resourceful, more effective, and generally more satisfied when they come up with their own solutions. And because they choose the solution, they are more likely to follow through with action. When what they need really is expert advice, they will have motivation to find that, too.
The Coach
Your coach at Visualize Health is someone who listens to the very best in others, even when they can't hear it in themselves. A coach is someone who cares that people create what they say they want, that they follow through when they choose. The coach is there to hold people accountable and keep them moving forward toward their dreams and goals.
Impact of Visualizing Health
If you answered yes to any of the questions above, Visualize Health can have a positive impact on your situation. Working with your own personal health coach will help you achieve the healthy lifestyle changes to significantly impact your ability to recovery from symptoms.
Our goal at Visualize Health goal is to help you begin and maintain new healthy way of functioning which will improve the quality of your life. All along the way, your coach supports, encourages, challenges and motivates you.
