Cancer and Drug Treatment improved with Qigong practice Acupuncture and Acupressure for Treatment Side Effect Lung Cancer and Green Tea Health coaching takes the point of view that you, the client, have the answers and on some level know what you need to do to achieve your goals. The answers might be part of your conscious awareness. You may turn to a health coach to help you stick to your plans to increase the quality of your life, eat well, exercise, meditate, relax or laugh more. The solutions might be deep within your subconscious, and you turn to a health coach to ask the questions that encourage you to see things in a different way and allow the information on how you can improve the quality of your life to percolate to the surface. Questions and answers come from you, the client, from your inner wisdom, the power of your mind and subconscious. The coach does not deliver answers. The coach asks questions, inviting discovery. You may never have sought the answer before the coach asks the question - the question creates the channel for self-discovery - but the answer is already there. And with the answer is healing, energy, love and laughter enough to change your life. You, the client, are more resourceful, more effective, and generally more satisfied when you come up with your own solutions. And because you've chosen the solution, you are more likely to follow through with action. When what you really need is expert advice, you will have the motivation to find that, too. More and more cancer patients, including mesothelioma patients, are giving Health Coaching a try for more joy and satisfaction in their lives; pain and stress relief; and to make choices that hasten recovery after mesothelioma surgery and reduce the side effects of certain medications, including chemotherapy. How it Works As a client, you typically fill out an intake form including a list of your goals. Often you are encouraged to list goals in a positive way as something positive you have already attained, rather than something to get rid of in the future. If you want to be pain or stress free, the goal might be phrased, "I wake up feeling good, relaxed, with lots of energy." If you want less rib pain, the goal might be phrased, "I feel free to take a big breath of air, nourishing my body with oxygen and feel comfortable and relaxed as I breath." Some of the benefits of health coaching hinge on the imagery or visualization of already having the outcome you want. Health coaches may also incorporate energy medicine modalities into the sessions, such as Reiki or Matrix Energetics depending on their other training. Often you start by looking at a scale 0 to 10 with 10 being the perfect state of that goal. Where are you on that scale? What would the perfect ten look like? How would your body feel? How would your relationships be influenced if you had that perfect ten? How would you wake up in the morning? What would your life be like when you go to bed at night? The Health Coach may also help you look at things in your life and environment that are "energy sappers" and support you to formulate a plan on how to change things so that you have more energy to heal and enjoy your life. In the book Co-Active Coaching, Laura Whitworth refers to coaching as an "Intuition Fitness Center." Listening to you, in person or over the phone, at each step of the way, the Health Coach will take you through questions, allowing you to formulate and carry out plans that improve your existence and your environment. Many individuals, especially those who are ill, note that the touch of another human being is often enough to make them feel just a little bit better. The therapy known as Matrix Energetics takes that premise a few steps further. This emerging energy practice or form of transformational consciousness, has been utilized by people with a diagnosis of aggressive cancers like mesothelioma, as well as other diseases and malignancies. Matrix Energetics was developed in the 1980's by Richard Bartlett, DC, ND, a chiropractor and naturopathic doctor, who spent some 30 years studying and practicing manipulative therapies, energy medicine, nutritional therapies and teaching them to his colleagues and others who wished to learn. Today, the therapy is offered by health care practitioners and lay people worldwide and is being utilized by clients battling cancers like malignant mesothelioma. Matrix Energetics is said to work with the person’s energy field to help support the body's natural ability to heal and notice something different. It is considered safe for all ages and for those with various disorders or diseases because it is totally non-invasive. It is generally used in tandem with traditional therapies, and proponents of the technique do not profess to being able to cure any particular disease with Matrix Energetics. In the field of Matrix Energetics, practitioners look where they want to go and observe what is useful. Diagnoses, signs and symptoms, pain, hypertrophy, hyperplasia, autoimmune diseases, and neurological dysfunctions are all things that can "go on the clipboard," but they are not what practitioners look at. Matrix Energetics practitioners notice things about you, the client, in person or in phone consultations, that take you towards your goals, such as a healthy immune system, balanced microtubule function, great respiratory system, comfortable movement and activities. In other words all the places you want to go. You and the practitioner visualize what you want, and the practitioner helps you open the door, hold space, and look through a window into the potential of a healthy, happy, vibrant life. For cancer patients, Matrix Energetics is recommended for those currently undergoing standard cancer treatments, including mesothelioma chemotherapy and radiation. Because these treatments harm healthy tissue in addition to killing cancer cells, often prompt anxiety, and can cause pain, nausea, and fatigue, it is believed that supportive treatments with Matrix Energetics can help lessen these side effects, relieve stress, hasten recovery after surgery, and improve the patient's overall quality of life. Matrix Energetics is performed by a certified Matrix Energetics practitioner who has studied this energy medicine approach. At a therapy session, the practitioner will begin by consulting with you as to your concerns and what issues you would like to address. After answering any questions, the therapist may have you stand as he/she puts his/her hands on you or you may sit or lay down on a massage table. All of this takes place fully clothed. The practitioner will place his/her hands on or around you in order to connect with you. The session lasts between 30 and 60 minutes and during the treatment the practitioner aims to notice something that can support you, allowing the energy field to clear and balance at the appropriate points on the body. It is important to understand that Matrix Energetics is not a scientific mesothelioma treatment or cure for cancer, nor is there any scientific proof that the biology of the disease can be altered in any way by this therapy or that this therapy will cause the cancer to improve. There are, however, no known risks associated with the treatment and many patients report an overall feeling of well-being and more hopeful when the therapy has concluded. "The authors have examined the effects of coaching sensory self-monitoring and reporting on pain-related variables in patients with lung cancer. Randomly assigned to coached or not-coached groups, 215 patients have their interactions with their providers audiotaped and complete study measures pre- and postintervention. Of the 151 patients who complete the 4-week study, those coached are more likely than those not coached to give their providers unsolicited sensory pain information and to mention it before their providers ask for it. The mean number of pain parameters discussed during the audiotaped clinic visit is statistically larger at study end for the coached group. Scores for analgesic adequacy, all pain indices except one, anxiety, depression, and catastrophizing coping are not significantly different. Although coaching increases the amount of pain data communicated to providers by patients with lung cancer, the magnitude is small and does not lead to improved adequacy of analgesics prescribed for each patient's pain level." "Dyspnea is a frequent and devastating symptom among advanced cancer patients for which improved and low-cost palliative techniques are needed. Methods: A one-group repeated measures research design investigated the efficacy of guided imagery (GI) with theta music (M) on dyspnea in advanced cancer patients. The intervention consisted of four periods: (a) pretest; (b) intervention with peaceful non-M; (c) intervention with 10 min of GI with M (GI/M), with the first and last 3 min being M only (i.e., the middle 4 min was GI/M); and (d) posttest. Dyspnea outcome was measured with the Modified Borg Scale (MBS) for self-reported evaluation of dyspneic symptoms. Physiological parameters measured were pulse oxygen saturation (SpO2), end-tidal CO2 (EtCO2), heart rate (HR), and respiratory rate (RR). Posttest qualitative data were obtained via interview for subjective patient experience. Results: Participants included 53 patients, 33% with lung cancer. GI/M produced a significant decrease in MBS scores; 90% of the subjects gave positive qualitative reviews of GI/M. SpO2 did not change significantly over time. GI/M significantly increased EtCO2, decreased RR, and decreased HR. Discussion: This study demonstrates that GI/M is a useful intervention for palliative care of patients with dyspnea. M alone was demonstrated to be effective, while soothing non-M was not effective. GI/M was more effective than M alone. GI/M should be considered low-cost end-of-life palliative care for dyspnea." This from Mesothelioma.com, a leading web resource for those affected by mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the lining of the lungs and abdomen. "The American Cancer Society understands that Craniosacral Therapy can be a beneficial, non-invasive addition to a cancer patient’s treatment regimen, as it may relieve pain and headaches and lessen patient discomfort. When used in harmony with conventional cancer management methods, such as chemotherapy, Craniosacral Therapy may promote a sense of calm and is said to aid in the function of a cancer sufferer’s immune system. Scientific Studies of Qigong include this article, which "focuses on internal Qi, because almost everyone can learn Qigong exercises for maintaining health and self-healing," writes Dr. Sancier. ("Internal" Qi involves self-practice, whereas "external" Qi involves, for example, a Qigong Master emitting Qi to someone.). Dr. Sancier writes, in the practice of Chinese therapies such as Qigong, "the flow of Qi is regulated, and blockage of the flow of Qi is removed. Energy blocks or excess or deficient Qi may result from disease, injury, or stress." -- An original paper by Kenneth M. Sancier, Ph.D, "Medical Applications of Qigong," was published by "Alternative Therapies" in January 1996.
Dr. Sancier referenced a study of patients with "medically diagnosed malignant cancer." They were divided into two groups, and all received drugs. One group, however, practiced Qigong. "Both groups improved, but the [Qigong] group showed improvement in strength, appetite, freedom from diarrhea, and weight gain four to nine times greater than the control group." Additionally, a measure of the immune function improved for the Qigong group and decreased for the control group.
Corticosteroids, antidopaminergig agents and 5-HT3 antagonists are the most commonly used drugs in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced vomiting. Acupuncture and acupressure have also appeared to exert antiemetic effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of acupressure in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced vomiting resistant to the standard antiemetic therapies.
The study included 40 consecutive advanced cancer patients with untreatable chemotherapy-induced vomiting. Colorectal cancer, lung cancer and breast cancer were the neoplasm most frequent in our patients. According to tumour histotype, patients received chemotherapeutic regimens containing the main emetic cytotoxic agents, including cisplatin and athracyclines. Acupressure was made by PC6 point stimulation for at least 6 h/day at the onset of chemotherapy.
The therapeutic approach was well accepted by the overall patients. An evident improvement in the emetic symptomatology was achieved in 28/40 (70%) patients, without significant differences in relation to neither tumor histotype, nor type of chemotherapeutic agent. CONCLUSIONS: This preliminary study seems to suggest that a bioenergetic approach by acupressure on PC6 point may be effective in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced vomiting resistant to the conventional pharmacological strategies, as previously demonstrated for vomiting occurring during pregnancy. Gardani, G., R. Cerrone, et al. (2006). "Effect of acupressure on nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy in cancer patients." Minerva Med 97(5): 391-394. [Medline abstract].
"Epidemiological studies on humans and investigations in animal models suggest that consumption of green tea has anti-cancer effects. Small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) has a poor prognosis, particularly due to the development of drug resistance. We investigated the effects of the green tea polyphenol, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on human SCLC cells. EGCG had similar effects (IC(50) of approximately 70 microM) on drug-sensitive (H69) and drug-resistant (H69VP) SCLC cells, indicating that it is not part of the drug resistance phenotype expressed in these cells. These data indicate the potential use of EGCG, and possibly green tea, in treating SCLC." Sadava, D., E. Whitlock, et al. (2007). Matrix Energetics
Integrative Manual Therapy
Developed in the United States in the 1980's by Sharon Weiselfish Giammatteo, PT, PhD, Integrative Manual Therapy (IMT) is a type of gentle soft tissue manipulation that is aimed not at fixing any specific health problem, but at helping the body reach a balance with improved mobility / movement, circulation, sensory function and immune responsiveness. IMT has been used by people in the United States as well as around the world over the last 30 years.
This hands-on therapy is often performed by the same practitioners who offer other holistic forms of complementary therapies including massage, physical therapy, chiropractic, occupational therapy, energy field healing, matrix energetics, homeopathics, and a variety of other holistically-oriented remedies.
How Does Integrative Manual Therapy Work?
Those trained in IMT use their hands in a gentle way on your body as you lay clothed on a massage table. The aim of the touch is to elicit a change in joint mobility and function through gentle mobilization techniques and a nervous system response through addressing reflex points (similar to acupuncture called synchronizers, hypothalamus regulation mechanisms, and reference points). IMT practitioners also palpate various rhythms in the body such as the heartbeat, craniosacral rhythms, muscle rhythms and more. Addressing these rhythms or motilities, is like a very gentle form of CPR, where the practitioner uses a very specific pressure in a very specific location to balance a rhythm in the body. Most therapy sessions last a total of 60 minutes and several sessions will be most likely be recommended depending on your goals.
Proponents of the technique believe that, after the therapy, the mobility of the joints and flow of circulation, lymph, and cerebrospinal fluid will be corrected and that connections between the nervous system and immune, digestive, and musculoskeletal systems will be improved, prompting a feeling of relaxation and increased energy. However, more scientific studies must be done to verify these statements.
Integrative Manual Therapy for Cancer Patients
Integrative Manual Therapy does not propose to offer a cure for cancer or even to help slow the progression of the disease or change its molecular structure. Instead, it is offered most often as a complementary therapy for use by those who are undergoing traditional cancer treatments, such as radiation and chemotherapy, and who wish to find a natural way to counteract some of the symptoms of the disease or side effects of these treatments.
Indeed, researchers have studied Integrative Manual Therapy as a treatment for pain, lymph congestion, and muscle dysfunction caused by cancer and cancer treatments. It has also been tested as a potential treatment for the relief of stress and anxiety, often an ongoing problem for cancer patients as well. Though there is a lack of steadfast scientific evidence supporting the claims that Integrative Manual Therapy helps ease both pain and anxiety, patients who have tried IMT note a sense of relaxation after a session with fewer symptoms and an overall feeling of well-being in the long run.
Is it Safe?
Integrative Manual Therapy involves a very gentle manipulation of the skin, muscles, and joints and is totally non-invasive. Therefore, it is often safer for cancer patients than other treatments that are more vigorous. Nevertheless, cancer patients should always take the time to talk to their practitioners about their conditions and any areas of concern on the body where injury might occur. If the therapy causes pain, it should be stopped immediately.

Introducing Your Health Coach: Kimberly Burnham
I look forward to working with you and learning about your health needs and goals. Please feel free to contact me via email with any questions you may have. I'm here to support you in your effort to create the life you desire.
I have a diverse educational background which has allowed me to see as the Japanese say, “there many ways to get to the top of Mount Fuji.” I completed my PhD in Integrative Medicine in 2006 on "The Effect of Integrative Manual Therapy on the Symptom’s of Parkinson's Disease." and have done substantial research into the benefits of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) enabling me to understand the health concerns of my clients and work as part of a health care team, when desired, communicating effectively with my client as well as their health care providers.
In 1993, I graduated Sutherland-Chan Massage Therapy School in Toronto, Canada. An excellent education there prepared me for a move into the health care field. I also spent 5 years studying at the Canadian College of Osteopathy, which helped me each individual person in a holistic way. My training in cranial work, energy medicine, Brain Stimulating Method, Listening with the Whole Body, Clinical Hypnotherapy, and Non-Violent Communication has developed my ability to listen to the client and perceive shifts as they progress towards their goals.
I have been in private practice using Integrative Medicine, Manual Therapy, Matrix Energetics and Health Coaching for the last two years in West Hartford, CT as well as consulting in a number of physical therapy clinics across the country. Before that as the Director of Knowledge Management at the Center for Integrative Manual Therapy, I answered questions for clients, students and the general public about what non-surgery and non-medication related therapies can do for healing and health. Two of my favorite quotes around the potential of an integrative approach to health and consciousness are, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Arthur C Clarke, Science Fiction Writer and "Magic is the art of causing changes in consciousness at will" Dion Fortune.
My global perspective on health and good living is the result of growing up in Colombia and in Belgium and later teaching English and studying shiatsu in Japan. My favorite place in all the world to Scuba dive is the Red Sea off the coast of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. I agree with Albert Einstein that , “the most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or hostile universe.." My world view is that we live in an abundant universe supportive of each of us having quality of life.
I currently live in West Hartford, CT with my partner and enjoy traveling, most recently working in Germany and touring Turkey, where I visited a memorial to Rumi, one of my favorite poets who said, "There is a field out beyond right and wrong. I will meet you there.".
I practice Tibetan meditation, Wisdom Healing Qigong and love growing fruits and vegetables in my garden. These activities center and calm me, allowing me to be more present for my clients. They also empowers me to change and reach my personal goals. As Richard Bartlett, developer of Matrix Energetics says, "Change now, while you still can. Change now because you can, change now because it is the right thing to do. Change now because there is no right, no left, no time left, no space left. Only you. Change"
Freedom of Space and Time
Here's my check in on my two baby steps!
1. Switch out the bedside tables - I did not do this. In the process, I realized that, for now, the tables work fine. What I did was to remove 50% of what was on them leaving only what gives me joy! And, as a result, I have been like a tornado in the bedroom doing the same thing. And, have liberated one bathroom of all the things that do not give me joy!
2. Holding things up in my house using the Joy Barometer is working perfectly for me. I am looking at everything with that eye as I pass from room to room and it is making what seemed insurmountable very doable!
Thanks for the time, the attention, the session. – Julia R.

Thank you so much for the session. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I could literally feel the energy on around me and coming from the paper . I also once I hung up was flooded with ideas of how to attain extra money. Also at work the very next day I was offered by a customer a financial opportunity to do in my spare time and depending on how much I sell could manifest a trip to see the seven wonders if the world in 2012. I was thrilled. Thank you for your generosity. I feel more focused and was very happy with the session ! Claudia B.
Quality of Life Management 101
Chronic Conditions
Chronic just means something has been going on for a while or it hasn’t changed in a positive way for a while. Chronic says nothing about the potential for healing and shifts in the condition.
At Visualize Health we see so many people who are healing and recovering from a wide variety of conditions, previously considered chronic or degenerative.
Many chronic conditions can be improved by simple changes to healthy lifestyle habits such as visualization, exercising, eating better, managing your stress/anxiety, losing weight and attaining freedom from addictions.
The personal health coaches at Visualize Health work with individuals who have a diagnosis of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or other chronic issues such as arthritis, back pain, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia, Celiac disease and more.
Motivation and Performance
“Organizations have learned that highly motivated and fulfilled employees at all levels produce high-performance results for the organization.” Laura Whitworth (2007) in Co-active coaching: new skills for coaching people toward success in work and life.
Our body can be thought of on some level as a large organization of cells. When each cell is highly motivated, fulfilled and in high performance mode, results for the individual person can be a remarkable quality of life. At Visualize Health, we use health coaching principles all the way from a look at relationships at the team or business organization level to a look at health on a cellular level, working always with the individual person and their needs.
The Coaching Relationship
Coaching is a form of conversation, a dialogue between the coach and client or organizational team with qualities including respect, openness, compassion, empathy, and a rigorous commitment to speaking the truth.
Coaching is not about solving problems, although problems will be solved. It is not primarily about improving performance, attaining goals, or achieving results, although all of that will certainty happen in an effective coaching relationship.
Coaching is chiefly about discovery, awareness, and choice. It is a way of effectively empowering you to find your own answers, encouraging and supporting you on the path as you continue to make important choices.
Questions and Answers
Questions and Answers come from the you, from you inner wisdom, the power of your mind and subconscious. The coach does not deliver answers. The coach asks questions, inviting discovery. The client may never have sought the answer before the coach asks the question - the question creates the channel for self-discovery - but the answer is already there for you.
Clients are more resourceful, more effective, and generally more satisfied when they come up with their own solutions. And because they choose the solution, they are more likely to follow through with action. When what they need really is expert advice, they will have motivation to find that, too.
The Coach
Your coach at Visualize Health is someone who listens to the very best in others, even when they can't hear it in themselves. A coach is someone who cares that people create what they say they want, that they follow through when they choose. The coach is there to hold people accountable and keep them moving forward toward their dreams and goals.
Impact of Visualizing Health
If you answered yes to any of the questions above, Visualize Health can have a positive impact on your situation. Working with your own personal health coach will help you achieve the healthy lifestyle changes to significantly impact your ability to recovery from symptoms.
Our goal at Visualize Health goal is to help you begin and maintain new healthy way of functioning which will improve the quality of your life. All along the way, your coach supports, encourages, challenges and motivates you.
